The TLC oversees a transportation ecosystem that moves nearly 1 million riders every single day the equivalent of the entire Boston transit system. In this New Era for TLC, the agency is guided by three core priorities: - Driver and Passenger Dignity ensuring every interaction reflects respect and fairness - Corporate Accountability holding regulated entities to consistent, transparent standards - A Transportation System that Works Together equitable, modern, and accessible Job Description: The Prosecution Division investigates and prosecutes violations of the New York City Administrative Code and TLC Rules arising from administrative, field, and consumer-initiated complaints. Attorneys handle a diverse and challenging caseload involving reckless driving, unlicensed operation, illegal street hails, harassment, leaving the scene of an accident, fraud, consumer protection, and other matters affecting public safety. This position offers an outstanding opportunity for attorneys particularly those beginning their litigation careers to develop substantial courtroom advocacy experience from the outset. Prosecuting Attorneys manage their own caseloads, regularly appear before Administrative Law Judges at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH), examine witnesses, introduce evidence, negotiate settlements, draft legal pleadings and appeals, and make independent prosecutorial recommendations under the guidance of experienced supervisors. Through rotations in Consumer Intake, Settlements, Hearings, Appeals, and specialized enforcement assignments, attorneys gain broad, practical litigation experience and develop the advocacy, negotiation, and legal writing skills that serve as a strong foundation for a successful legal career. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Under the supervision of experienced attorneys, assist in the management of caseloads for agency administrative hearings including preparing and presenting witnesses and evidence at trials; review and evaluate cases to effectively negotiate plea and settlement agreements with respondents and legal representatives; interview consumer complainants to obtain details and to determine appropriate charging violations and settlement offers; review dispositions for summonses dismissed at OATH; draft appeals, legal memos, and advisory opinions; make determinations based on legal research; and provide legal support as needed. Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.
Interested candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize, manage time, and engage in multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Although not required, the successful applicant will likely have one or more of the following academic or professional experiences: litigation, and/or customer relations. Bilingual proficiency preferred.
