Open to candidates who are permanent. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With a staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control. The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS) protect the public, including New York's most vulnerable citizens, from a broad range of hazards that may pose a threat to health or safety. DOHMH is mandated to inspect 26,000 restaurants annually, school cafeterias, and mobile food vending units, adult day care centers, senior centers, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other facilities. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO: • Develops and delivers presentations, educational programs, and training workshops to promote public health and compliance with the health code. • Prepares, reviews and develops written health education material, community resource lists, referral information and visual aids, and coordinates their distribution and presentation to community members, organizations, agencies, institutions, and other stakeholders. • Represents the agency at meetings with the public and stakeholders to share information. • Conducts surveys of the public, target populations, stakeholders, and agency staff to identify public health needs, challenges, and available resources. • Plans and carries out on-the-job trainings. • Explains program/agency policies, objectives, and procedures. • Acts as liaison with other agencies. 1. A master's degree from an accredited college or university in public health, health education, health promotion, or a closely related field; or 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, health communications, or a closely related field; or 3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in education, nursing, epidemiology, wellness and fitness, or nutrition and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in health education; or 4. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in marketing, human services, social work or psychology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in health education. 5. In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, candidates must have three additional years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “3” and “4” above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
